Maintaining Maine's Clean Hiking Environment:
Maine has some of the largest tracts of unspoiled and unpopulated wilderness in the Northeast. It also has a rich tradition of recycling. All the citizens of Maine would encourage you to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Maine has a "carry in - carry out" policy for its state parks, campsites, and hiking trails. Here are some tips to help you reduce the amount of garbage you might produce while hiking in Maine.
Be sure you ask what the policy is regarding trash. Some trailheads have bins where you can leave your recycleables. Be sure you leave your campsite clean for the next visitor. Thanks for keeping Maine clean. [ Return to Maine Hiking Page ]
